USTA/Midwest Section Names School District of the Year

Indianapolis, Ind. --- The USTA/Midwest Section has recognized Racine Unified School District of Racine, Wis., as its first School District of the Year. This award was created to recognize a school district that incorporates tennis through Physical Education classes, offers after-school tennis programming, and uses tennis as a vehicle to improve student health and fitness. Racine Unified School District (RUSD) will also receive a tennis equipment package from Wilson Sports.

Greg Boyd, Junior Recreation and Teams Coordinator for the USTA/Midwest Section said, "We are very proud to recognize Racine Unified School District with this award. RUSD is a great example of how a school district facing financial issues can work with community partners to provide tennis programming for their students."

RUSD is the fourth largest district in the state of Wisconsin and consists of 36 schools and 21,000 students. RUSD partnered with the Racine Community Tennis Association and helped provide equipment and training for physical education teachers about including tennis in their curriculums. Nearly 40 physical education teachers from 27 different schools in the district were trained, and RUSD plans to have every physical education teacher trained in tennis instruction for the next school year.

The school district is also planning tennis assemblies for the next school year. The school district offers after-school tennis programming for over a hundred students through The Lighted Schoolhouse, and also plans to expand their programming. RUSD works with numerous partners in the community to help students experience the benefits of tennis. They have worked with the YMCA, Racine Indoor Tennis Club, Racine Park & Recreation Department, and the Racine Unified Parent Student Teacher Association

The Racine Unified School District has three high schools that offer no-cut tennis teams, and team participation continues to grow. RUSD plans to continue using tennis to help students achieve a healthy, active lifestyle.
